I Found A Treasure ~ Antique Lace

Mark and I went to an antique barn today and spent about an hour on the 2 floors taking our time to look in all the nooks and crannies. They had a lot of smalls in cabinets, antique leather baby boots, putz sheep, rag dolls in all sizes, cradles and some really ugly pictures of old people tied in ribbon. Just as I was getting sore legs and back from all the bending I found a wonderful treasure. It is approx. 8 yards of hand crocheted lace for $10.00. I couldn't get to the register fast enough! :)

This antique Victorian baby bonnet is made of white batiste cotton and has embroidered flowers, valenciennes lace trimmed edges, and decorative stitching and beading. I was asked a while ago to be interviewed about my journey into the doll making world which I graciously declined as there really isn't anything interesting about that aspect of my life. I was thinking recently that some of you might like to know a little about me so here goes. I was born in Morrisville, Vermont in 1949 to Roland and Louise (Walker) Hamel. I have three brothers and two sisters. I have two children, Sean (father to grandchildren, Meagan & Myles ) and Chad Harrington who are my pride and joy. I have been married to Mark Hunziker since 1991. I was widowed and saw Mark again at our 20 year high school class reunion and we have been together ever since. I have two step-children, Johanna and Teague Hunziker (father to granddaughter, Violet).

My working career took me on many paths. I worked with emotionally disturbed and handicapped children for 7 years. I worked in the medical billing field for a large hospital physician group and then several private practices for 20 years, I traveled around the United States installing and training medical office staff on Pediatric computer systems, I worked for Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Vermont Medicaid, and was the State of Vermont Medicare B Representative for 9 years. My last job before retiring in 2005 was manager of patient financial services for Copley Hospital in Morrisville, Vermont which is the hospital where I was born so you might say I came full circle.

My Mom and Dad had a craft business for many years and did hundreds of shows together. I was busy working full time and to be frank, just the word "crafts" turned me off. I learned the art of basket weaving in 2004 and the bug hit me hard. I made enough baskets to supply the entire State of Vermont, so what to do with them all. My Mom suggested we do craft shows and then the journey began. I started making all kinds of things, baskets, Santa's and then in 2008 I made my first "artist" doll. I learned about painting, applying paper clay and my biggest accomplishment was learning how to use my sewing machine. I couldn't even thread it right say nothing about changing the bobbin so it is now quite rewarding when I am able to make something out of nothing by the push of a pedal and a steady hand, now if I could just read a pattern.

This has been my journey so far and I am so happy that you all have been a part of it. ♥Judi

I have made a papier mache and a wooden Queen Anne and today I made an all cloth Queen Anne doll. She measures 12" tall. I hand painted her and she has a crackle finish which is very hard to see in my pictures unfortunately because I really like the way it came out. She is wearing a recycled Barbie doll dress which fits her perfectly I might add and she is very pleased with her black slippers.

I was quite happy with her or so I thought but something wasn't right. Yesterday I decided to completely repaint her head. I WANT SPRING!

This morning I took these pictures as my husband and son were out yet again trying to clean up snow from our yard. I read today that Vermont has received 79"s of snow so far with 80"s being the average total for the whole season, and it is only the beginning of February. We are getting 3-6"s of snow today. I really don't know where we are going to put all this snow as our yard is pretty much full to the brim now. We could throw one heck of a sugar on snow party this year. For those of you that may wonder what that is. We fill a pan with fresh clean snow, pour hot Vermont maple syrup on it which turns it into a sticky soft yummy ball that you eat with a fork. How is the weather in your neck of the woods?

Violet Helen Hunziker~Age 10 mos.

I am tired of Winter already aren't you! Another week and another storm brewing its ugly head and coming this way. At least it is going to be snow and not ice (my feeble attempt at looking at the bright side). I think we saw a total of 5 days of sunshine the whole month of January and I sure am missing sunny winter days that make Vermont so beautiful. Claire

Claire is 17" tall, made of muslin that has been painted with artist acrylics in the style of Izannah Walker dolls made in the 1800's. She has on a period style dress with growth pleats, her petticoat is cotton eyelet fabric and she has white lace trim around her ankles for the appearance of leggings. Her boots are painted tan with black buttons. Pictured in her lap is a calico pea hen pin keep. SOLD

Mavis is 17" tall and made with muslin which has been hand painted, sanded and stained to give her an antique appearance. She feels like soft leather and has a beautiful warm patina with lots of distress marks. Mavis has needle felted wavy grey wool hair which is lighter than pictured.

Emily

Emily is 14" tall, made of muslin with hand molded papier mache head and shoulders and painted with artist acrylics. I used a doll pattern created by Dixie Redmond of northdixiedesigns. Emily has a wonderful antiqued sampler pin keep and a floral print hat box for traveling. Emily was sold but the buyer had financial difficulties, I can relate, so she is back on ebay.

An Easter Vignette

Today I received an email wishing me a Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday. What was so special was that it was from a fellow doll artist who I have admired for many years and it seems that she has admired my work as well but we have never communicated with each other. What a wonderful gift to give someone when they least expect it and it is one that I will never forget. It reminded me how valuable a kind word can be, especially when it is unsolicited and unexpected. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. :)

I did not get the red and grey reproduction dress fabric that I had originally wanted in the mail and Christmas is getting close so I made her a red dress instead and she is quite happy that I have finally stopped dressing and undressing her. Laura has been sold!

The dress fabric for her winter dress should be here by the end of this week. Due to illness shipping was delayed. I have been having fun with her other clothes as you can see.

Laura now has another outfit, a skirt made of chocolate brown and tan printed cotton with a bonnet that has a tan and brown contrasting print on the brim with the dress fabric in the back and for the ties. Her cape is wool with a black rayon lining. This is her Fall outfit!

Laura now has a new dress made of teal blue and white reproduction fabric. I am still waiting for the red and grey reproduction fabric to come so I decided to make a couple of outfits. I tweeked her eyes and she and I are much happier with the results, cosmetic surgery is wonderful and it didn't cost a thing! I also made her a bonnet using antique batiste that has a beautiful trim on the brim. This is her Spring outfit! I must also mention that I came up with a way for Laura to wear different boots, red ones with her red and grey dress and her brown high top boots with her other outfits. I have sewn snaps to her body and the tops of each leg (2 per leg) so you can change her legs. I thought it was a great idea, what do you think?

Laura is my latest work in progress. She is 22" tall, she needs to be a big girl to fill her red boots! I have made her undies with cotton eyelet fabric. Today I made her arms and just finished stitching her fingers. I have some wonderful grey and red reproduction fabric for her dress ordered and hope the red compliments her boots, we shall see.

14" baby rag doll made from coffee/cinnamon stained muslin. She has a pencil drawn face that I faded with light sanding. Her dress is antique cotton batiste with beautiful delicate lace on the scalloped hem, sleeves and neckline. The dress is 17" long and is in mint condition with no stains or tears. Sold.

I am having so much fun with Abby. She is going to have several outfits, today I made a two piece dress in tan and creme cotton print with vintage cotton crochet lace trim on the neck and hem of the top. She has a new bonnet trimmed in lace and linen leggings with crochet trim that matches her dress trim. I made Abby a doll box covered in black and gold stenciled paper and an image of her on the top which has been antiqued. Abby is holding a little laundry basket. I'll have more updates in the next few days.

My latest Izannah Walker inspired doll is 16" tall. I haven't chosen a name for her yet, she appears to have a younger face so I will have to find something age appropriate. Suggestions are welcome! Today I am sewing her chemise, pantaloons and petticoat using white cotton eyelet fabric. It is a cold and dreary day today, a perfect day to work on a doll.
